Allora per chi sta seguendo la vicenda...

Geologist in collegamento telefonico ha appena risposto ad alcune domande di BBC 1 (non radio onda libera), sta finendo mentre scrivo l'intervista. In breve:

- per il nuovo album sono tornati a incidere vicino alla high school dove si sono conosciuti, e stavolta erano tutti e 4;
- Merriweather era pieno di sample messi uno sopra l'altro, questo nuovo come impostazione è più rock, o comunque live, o comunque suonato da una band;
- Non si aspettavano il successo mediatico di MPP e fondamentalmente ha fatto capire che non gliene frega niente se il nuovo non avrà lo stesso riscontro, anzi quasi ha detto che è probabile che non lo avrà;
- Il successo di MPP non ha cambiato per niente le loro vite;
- Faranno il tour, anche in Europa (ha ricordato ATP e Primavera);
- confermata la tracklist di cui sopra, i 2 pezzi nuovi Honeycomb e Gotham NON faranno parte del nuovo album, sebbene gli faranno da apripista. Vogliono pubblicare più singoli fuori dall'album, ha detto, facendo l'esempio di "Paperback Writer" dei Beatles.

Honeycomb è un po' quello che mi fa incazzare di loro. Una bella melodia che già al secondo ascolto ti rimane in testa, per quanto strana, ma incastrata su una base da giocattolaio (e all'inizio ti prende pure per il culo facendoti pensare a Neon Indian, ma sono meno di 2 secondi). Se uno riesce a star dentro anche a Strawberry Jam, probabilmente per lui è un gran pezzo. Da quel che capisco il disco potrebbe non essere così, in caso meno male.

Gotham pone subito benissimo invece, solo che dopo un po' si perde (niente di grave).

sì Honeycomb è più vicina a Strawberry che non a MPP. Sono tutte e due queste nuove più suonate di MPP, come diceva Geologist nell'intervista rispetto alla direzione del nuovo disco.

Comunque finché si parla di sonorità strambe o suoni che non piacciono io posso anche capire che non siano per tutti i gusti, ma se si mettono di mezzo le melodie non transigo. Anzi, melodie e testi (non solo la poetica) sono eccezionali.

Strawberry Jam come melodie è anche più facile di certe cose dei vecchi tempi, per altro. Per dire, Sung Tongs per metà è facile, ma l'altra metà è molto più difficile di Strawberry Jam e Feels che di pezzi in realtà non astrusi ne hanno più di uno.


Ieri sera mi sono messo a cercare i tabulati per chitarra, e si trovano gli accordi per tutte, comprese queste due nuove.

Comunque finché si parla di sonorità strambe o suoni che non piacciono io posso anche capire che non siano per tutti i gusti, ma se si mettono di mezzo le melodie non transigo. Anzi, melodie e testi (non solo la poetica) sono eccezionali.

Dopo averli ascoltati molte volte mettendo da parte lo sdegno per il fdrindfrindfrr questo ci sta, anche se a volte capita che le forzino un po' per star dietro al ritmo che hanno impostato.

Su Sung Tongs di ascoltabili per me ce ne sono giusto due, forse tre. Quest'estate ci riprovo serenamente con la marmellata ma non assicuro niente, lì è il mal di testa che decide per me.

(a volte è troppo bello leggere le recensioni di pitchfork, sono approfondite e colgono l'essenza, mai solo la forma annoiata, sono i migliori a scrivere, anche se non sempre si è d'accordo)



diciamo che chiude un ideale trittico acustico con Sung Tongs e Campfire Songs (entrambi Animal Collective praticamente), più simile a quest'ultimo che al primo. Migliore di Campfire Songs. In ogni caso diverso, più intimo e isolato, mai corale o nipote dei Beach Boys.
Rispetto a Person Pitch e Tomboy (entrambi di Panda Bear solo) che sono pieni di vita e inviti a darci dentro come si può ognuno nella propria strada, Young Prayer è meditativo in altro senso, sicuramente più malinconico nelle sue nove tracce senza titolo. È uno di quegli album che piace ma non trovi le parole per spiegare bene perché, e a cui di tanto in tanto uno può tornare. È tutta essenza. E che piacerà ai pochissimi che lo ascolteranno, oltre che fare schifo al resto dei pochissimi che lo ascolteranno. Certo che è incredibile il salto e la diversità fra questo e Person Pitch prima e Tomboy poi.

Sconsigliato ai novizi e magari esagerato l'8.5 + best new music dell'epoca di pitchfork, è da ascoltare - così come gli altri 2 del trittico acustico - anche dalle casse del computer di notte, prima di addormentarsi.
